Calthorp and The Garden History Museum

It is 2 am……. Enough said…… the Calthorp project was an incredibly interesting community garden. The community support for public gardens and green space in London is admirable to say the least. To be 50% funded by grants and 50% though fundraising shows how nonprofits like this can be supported through multiple streams. Louise pictured below, is showing us how they prepare for a plant sale.

They also were experimenting with a bio digester to try to produce both fertilizer and energy in a closed loop system. Very interesting and they were quite knowledgeable.

Here we were shown some basic hydroponic systems for educational purposes. They were still in the building stage so they weren’t pretty yet but for people in the horticulture program we could understand where they were going.

We left Calthorp and walked through the parliament/big ben area. This is MI6 the British CIA, James bond works here.

And of course Big Ben
The garden history museum was a collection of horticultural items, paintings, and texts referencing the significance of horticulture in London. It was actually located in a church were several Arch-Bishiops who were buried in the crypt below. Kinda spooky if you ask me.

I also thought this was pretty cool, a container of DDT. For those of you that don’t know, this is one of the most dangerous chemicals humans have ever produced.
